I was born in Columbus in 1971 and grew up in the northeast Ohio town of Wooster. My parents enrolled me in the excellent public school system of Wooster, where I learned to value the importance of public education. Two of my grandparents were doctors in my hometown. My grandfather, Jim, co-founded the Wooster Clinic in the 1950s and my grandmother, Viola, opened her own free clinic several years later. They instilled in me a powerful sense of the importance of community service.
Growing up I played baseball, soccer and guitar. I joined my first environmental advocacy group in 1986 and have been a political activist for environmental and voter rights ever since, supporting Rock the Vote, The National Tree Trust, and several political campaigns. I’ve also worked in the education field for 15 years, most recently operating my own academic tutoring business. Lastly, I’m an author whose first book will be published in July.
